Older cars sit. That is the first thing to say. A 1979 911, a 1968 E-Type, a 1990s Aston — even one that’s driven well — will spend longer parked than moving. Sitting is the part of an old car’s life that storage is meant to address, and the battery is the place where neglect shows first. A flat battery is rarely just a flat battery. It is the surface symptom of three or four other small problems beneath it: a slow drain, a degraded cell, a charging system that never quite catches up because the car never quite gets a long enough run.
The shorthand most owners use is trickle charger. The shorthand most modern chargers use is smart charger — CTEK and the like. The two are not the same. A trickle charger pushes a steady, low current and keeps doing so. A smart charger reads the battery, decides what stage it’s at, and adjusts accordingly: bulk, absorption, float, recondition, hold. The smart approach is, in almost every modern case, the right one.
The question isn’t whether a facility charges batteries. It’s whether the charging is continuous, monitored, and right for the battery type.
Almost — but not always. There are still cars for which a basic continuous trickle is the safer choice: very early classics whose electrical systems weren’t designed to be probed by a microprocessor, vehicles with sensitive ECUs that don’t respond well to the pulse of a desulfation cycle, anything where the owner has fitted a lithium pack that needs its own dedicated maintainer. Knowing which is which is part of the job.
Here is what we do. Every vehicle, on a charger, every day it is with us. The chargers are matched to the battery type — lead-acid, AGM, lithium — and assigned per bay. They are checked when the staff do their morning round, and the readings are logged. If a battery starts behaving oddly — taking longer to absorb, sitting unusually low overnight — we tell the owner. We don’t replace batteries without asking.
If you store a car somewhere else, three questions are worth asking. First, is the charging continuous, or is it on a rotation between bays? (Rotation is common and not always wrong, but on long stays it can leave a battery low for days at a time.) Second, what chargers are used, and are they matched to your battery type? Third, what happens when a battery starts to fail — are you told, or is it quietly replaced and added to the bill?
None of this is novel. It is what any good workshop has done for years. The only thing storage adds is the time horizon: a car that sits for nine months under a poorly chosen charging routine arrives at its first drive of the year with a battery that was, technically, charged the whole time, and is now no good. The cure is small attention applied daily, not heroic attention applied once.
That, in the end, is what considered care looks like in this one small corner of the operation. A charger that suits the battery. A reading taken each morning. A note made when something changes. Nothing dramatic — and that’s the point.
